Drugs Commonly Used for Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation typically uses benzodiazepines, which reduce anxiety, muscle tension, and promote relaxation. The type of drug selected depends on procedure length and patient needs:
  • Valium® – Long-lasting, amnesic properties; ideal for longer or complex procedures.
  • Halcion® – Shorter half-life; commonly used for brief procedures.
  • Ativan® – Medium half-life; effective for anxiety relief during treatments under two hours.
  • Versed® – Short half-life; used for very short procedures, less than 30 minutes.

Types of Sedation We Offer

Different levels of sedation can be used depending on your comfort and the complexity of the procedure. Our team carefully reviews your medical history and current medications before recommending the most appropriate option:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild sedative delivered through a nose mask, nitrous oxide elevates mood and reduces anxiety while dulling pain. Most patients feel a light tingling sensation, with minimal side effects. Its effects wear off quickly after the procedure.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Ideal for patients who prefer not to use needles, oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment to produce a moderate level of relaxation. While you remain awake, most patients do not recall pain, sounds, or other sensations during the procedure.

IV Sedation: Intravenous sedation provides moderate sedation and is administered directly into the bloodstream for immediate effect. Patients often report feeling as though they “slept through” the treatment. IV sedation is typically used for more complex or shorter procedures. A designated driver is required after the appointment due to lingering drowsiness.
